Wasted Workouts?
Trolling one of my message boards, this question popped up. Somebody wasn't sure if their workouts were wasted because of their eating being out of control from stress. Well my opinion? NO! Especially during stressful times, we need exercise for other reasons besides weight loss. It strengthens heart function, muscle and joint function, as well as a host of hormonal/chemical balances and there are many studies that are linking this correlation. Relieving stress and all the physical ailments that come with it can be the perfect excuse to keep up exercise even if you are on a stress eating binge. Let us not mention that after a good sweat session, your head can be much clearer and help you deal with a stressful situation better, or even change your attitude and perspective towards the situation. Now from a weight loss perspective, it is true that you cannot out exercise a bad diet, but let's keep workout for other reasons aside from weight loss, it does a body good. The stress will pass, we will get back on the clean eating train, but that habit of exercise will still be with us if we keeping trucking along. Surely if anybody knows stress at this point, it is I. Even if it was just a walk for 2 miles, it was better then nothing at all. In fact, exercising, even light intensity, kept me out of the kitchen! Keeping consistent with it, actually helped me get back on track FASTER then if I just gave it all up and lost hope.
